آیت 5{ فَاَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَاُہْلِکُوْا بِالطَّاغِیَۃِ۔ } ”پس ثمود تو ہلاک کردیے گئے ایک حد سے بڑھ جانے والی آفت سے۔“ الطاغیۃ کے لغوی معنی حد سے گزر جانے والی چیز کے ہیں۔ یعنی انتہائی شدت والی چیز۔ اس کے لیے قرآن حکیم کے مختلف مقامات پر الرَّجفۃ زبردست زلزلہ ‘ الصَّیحۃ زور کا دھماکہ یا کڑک ‘ صَاعِقَۃ گرج الفاظ مذکور ہیں ‘ جو عذاب کی مختلف کیفیات کو بیان کرتے ہیں۔
