( وكانوا يصرون ) أي : يصممون ولا ينوون توبة ( على الحنث العظيم ) وهو الكفر بالله ، وجعل الأوثان والأنداد أربابا من دون الله .
قال ابن عباس : ( الحنث العظيم ) الشرك . وكذا قال مجاهد ، وعكرمة ، والضحاك ، وقتادة ، والسدي ، وغيرهم .
وقال الشعبي : هو اليمين الغموس .
