﴿أئذا متنا وكنا ترابا﴾: الهمزة للاستفهام الإنكاري، وإذا ظرف لما يستقبل من الزمن متضمن معنى الشرط، ومتنا فعل وفاعل، وجملة متنا في محل جر بإضافة الظرف إليها، وناصب الظرف مضمر معناه: أحين نموت ونبلى نرجع، لأن ما بعده دل عليه، وكنا: كان فعل ماض ناقص، و﴿نا﴾ اسمها، وترابًا خبرها.
﴿ذلك رجع بعيد﴾: ذلك مبتدأ، ورجع خبر، وبعيد صفة.
