( ولكل أمة أجل ) مدة ، وأكل وشرب . وقال ابن عباس وعطاء والحسن : يعني وقتا لنزول العذاب بهم ، ( فإذا جاء أجلهم ) وانقطع أكلهم ، ( لا يستأخرون ساعة ولا يستقدمون ) أي : ولا يتقدمون . وذلك حين سألوا العذاب فأنزل الله هذه الآية .
