Spesso viene tradotta con: «I lembi» o «Il limbo» perché «al-A‘ràf» evoca l’idea di un bordo (di vestito) o di frange. L’esegesi classica (Tabari VIII, 189-191) afferma trattarsi della muraglia che divide l’Inferno dal Paradiso. Altri esegeti dicono che sia il luogo in cui i credenti le cui opere di bene sono pari a quelle negative, attendono fiduciosi che Allah decida la loro sorte.
