Fadel Soliman, Bridges’ translation translation for Surah Al-Bayyinah — Ayah 5

98:5
وَمَآ أُمِرُوٓاْ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ حُنَفَآءَ وَيُقِيمُواْ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُواْ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَۚ وَذَٰلِكَ دِينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمَةِ ٥
And they were only commanded to worship Allah—devoting religion to Him, turning away from all that is false—and to establish the prayer and to bring1 the purifying charity2, and that is the religion3 most upright.
Footnotes
  • [1] The Qur’an always uses verb ‘to bring’ rather than verb ‘to give’ in association with charity; this should be pondered by the reader.
  • [2] The Arabic word used is zakāt, which denotes purification and growth.
  • [3] The Arabic word used is deen which means ‘a way of life’, ‘religion’ or ‘recompense’.
