Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Az-Zumar — Ayah 49

39:49
فَإِذَا مَسَّ ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ ضُرّٞ دَعَانَا ثُمَّ إِذَا خَوَّلۡنَٰهُ نِعۡمَةٗ مِّنَّا قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أُوتِيتُهُۥ عَلَىٰ عِلۡمِۭۚ بَلۡ هِيَ فِتۡنَةٞ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ ٤٩
When an affliction befalls man,1 he cries out to Us; but when We grant him a favour from Us, he says: “I have been granted this on account of my knowledge.”2 Nay; this (favour) is a test; but most of them do not know.3

  • [1] “The man”: the one who has aversion to Allah and whose face is distorted on hearing Allah alone being mentioned.
  • [2] This sentence can have two meanings:
  • [3] (1) That Allah knows that I am worthy of this blessing. That is why He has given me All this, otherwise He would not have blessed me if I had been an evil and wicked person in His sight.
  • [4] Frequently the Qur’an addresses the events of the Hereafter in pasttense; this grammatical shift should be pondered upon by the reader.
  • [5] The Arabic word used is jinnwhich are unseen beings that are accountable for their actions.
  • [6] The Arabic word used isayat(singularayah). Ayahmeans ‘sign’ or ‘proof’. It is also used to denote the unit of text in the Qur’an,like‘verse’ in poetry or‘sentence’ in prose.Each such unit isconsidered a ‘sign’from God.
