Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Ghafir — Ayah 35

40:35
ٱلَّذِينَ يُجَٰدِلُونَ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ سُلۡطَٰنٍ أَتَىٰهُمۡۖ كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَعِندَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَطۡبَعُ ٱللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ قَلۡبِ مُتَكَبِّرٖ جَبَّارٖ ٣٥
those1 who contend regarding Allah's Signs without any evidence that might have come to them.2 That is exceedingly loathsome to Allah and to those that believe. Thus does Allah seal the heart of everyone who is proud and high-handed.3

  • [2] It so appears that the next few sentences are an addition by Allah and an explanation of the words of the Believer of the people of Pharaoh.

  • [4] (1) They transgress all limits in their evil doing, and then develop such a taste for it that they do not feel inclined to accept any invitation to reform their morals.
  • [5] The Arabic word used is Qur’anwhich literally means ‘recital’ or ‘recitation’.
