Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Ghafir — Ayah 65

40:65
هُوَ ٱلۡحَيُّ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱدۡعُوهُ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَۗ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ ٦٥
He is the Ever-Living:1 there is no god but He. So call upon Him, consecrating to Him all your devotion.2 All praise and thanks be to Allah, the Lord of the whole Universe.3

  • [2] That is, His is the real and true life. He only is living by virtue of His own power. No one else has the eternal and everlasting lift but Him. All others have borrowed and temporary life, which is destined to death and perishable.
  • [3] That is, there is none else the hymns of whose praise may be sung and who may be thanked.
  • [4] A grammatical shift to present tense, which serves to create a vivid portrait of future events.
  • [5] A grammatical shift from singular to plural.
  • [6] Qira’at: Nafieʻ, Ibn ʻAmer and Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “Words ”.
