Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Fussilat — Ayah 10

41:10
وَجَعَلَ فِيهَا رَوَٰسِيَ مِن فَوۡقِهَا وَبَٰرَكَ فِيهَا وَقَدَّرَ فِيهَآ أَقۡوَٰتَهَا فِيٓ أَرۡبَعَةِ أَيَّامٖ سَوَآءٗ لِّلسَّآئِلِينَ ١٠
(After creating the earth) He set up firm mountains on it, blessed it,1 and provided it with sustenance in proportion to the needs of all who seek (sustenance).2 All this was done in four days.3

  • [1] Blessings of the earth imply those measureless and countless things which have been continuously coming out of it since millions and millions of years, and are fulfilling the ever increasing needs and requirements of all the creatures from the microscopic germs to the highly civilized man. Among these the principal blessings are the air and the water by which alone vegetable, animal and then human life became possible on the earth.
  • [2] This sentence has been interpreted by the commentators in different ways:
  • [3] Some of them interpret it to mean: The provisions of the earth were placed in it precisely according to the needs and requirements of those who ask, in exactly four days. That is, it took exactly four days, neither more nor less.
  • [4] The Arabic word used is jinnwhich are unseen beings that are accountable for their actions.
  • [5] The Arabic word used is Qur’anwhich literally means ‘recital’ or ‘recitation’.
  • [6] The Arabic word used is Muslimeenwhich means those who willingly submit to God, regardless of which prophet they followed.
