Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Fussilat — Ayah 14

41:14
إِذۡ جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلرُّسُلُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ قَالُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗ فَإِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ ١٤
When the Messengers (of Allah) came to them from the front and from the rear,1 saying: “Do not serve any but Allah”; they said: “Had our Lord so willed, He would have sent down angels. So we deny the Message you have brought.”2

  • [1] The Arabic word used isayat(singularayah). Ayahmeans ‘sign’ or ‘proof’. It is also used to denote the unit of text in the Qur’an,like ‘verse’ in poetry or ‘sentence’ in prose.Each such unit isconsidered a ‘sign’from God.

  • [3] (1) That the Messengers continued to come to them one after the other.
  • [4] Qira’at: All except for Nafieʻ, Ibn ʻAmer, Hafs and Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “And no product comes out of its sheaths nor does anyfemale conceive or deliver but with His knowledge.”
