Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Fussilat — Ayah 47

41:47
۞ إِلَيۡهِ يُرَدُّ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِۚ وَمَا تَخۡرُجُ مِن ثَمَرَٰتٖ مِّنۡ أَكۡمَامِهَا وَمَا تَحۡمِلُ مِنۡ أُنثَىٰ وَلَا تَضَعُ إِلَّا بِعِلۡمِهِۦۚ وَيَوۡمَ يُنَادِيهِمۡ أَيۡنَ شُرَكَآءِي قَالُوٓاْ ءَاذَنَّٰكَ مَا مِنَّا مِن شَهِيدٖ ٤٧
The knowledge of the Hour1 rests solely with Him.2 Not a fruit comes forth from its sheath, nor does any female conceive nor give birth to a child but it is in His knowledge.3 On that Day He will call out to them: “Where are those associates of Mine?” They will answer: “We have declared to You that none of us can bear witness to that.”4

  • [1] The Hour: the Hour of Resurrection, i.e. the Hour when the evildoers will be punished for their evil and the grievances of the oppressed good people will be redressed.
  • [2] By this the listeners have been made to realize two things:
  • [3] (1) That not only of Resurrection but the knowledge of all unseen things is reserved for Allah alone; there is no other knower of the unseen.
  • [4] (2) That God Who possesses the detailed knowledge of the most minor things cannot remain unaware of the acts and deeds of anybody.
  • [5] Referring to Jesus, son of Mary.
  • [6] The Arabic word used isayat(singularayah). Ayahmeans ‘sign’ or ‘proof’. It is also used to denote the unit of text in the Quran,like ‘verse’ in poetry or ‘sentence’ in prose.Each such unit isconsidered a ‘sign’from God.
  • [7] The Arabic word used is Muslimeenwhich means those who willingly submit to God, regardless of which prophet they followed.
  • [8] Qira’at: All except for Nafieʻ, Ibn ʻAmer, Hafs and Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “. . . whatever the selves desire and delights the eyes . . .”
