Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Fussilat — Ayah 5

41:5
وَقَالُواْ قُلُوبُنَا فِيٓ أَكِنَّةٖ مِّمَّا تَدۡعُونَآ إِلَيۡهِ وَفِيٓ ءَاذَانِنَا وَقۡرٞ وَمِنۢ بَيۡنِنَا وَبَيۡنِكَ حِجَابٞ فَٱعۡمَلۡ إِنَّنَا عَٰمِلُونَ ٥
They say: “Our hearts are securely wrapped up against what you call us to,1 and in our ears is a heaviness, and between you and us there is a veil.2 So act; we too are acting.”3

  • [2] That is, this invitation has divided us. It has cut us off from you. It has become a hindrance for us to join you.

  • [4] The Arabic word used is Qur’anwhich literally means ‘recital’ or ‘recitation’.
  • [5] The Arabic word here, zakāt, is the same word used for purifying charity, and which literally means purification and growth.
  • [6] Qira’at: Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “. . . in four days; (they are) equal for those who ask.”Yaʻqub read it as: “. . . in four equal days for those who ask.”
