إِنَّ هؤُلاءِ الكفرة يُحِبُّونَ الْعاجِلَةَ يؤثرونها على الآخرة، كقوله بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَياةَ الدُّنْيا. وَراءَهُمْ قدّامهم أو خلف ظهورهم لا يعبئون به يَوْماً ثَقِيلًا استعير الثقيل لشدّته وهو له، من الشيء الثقيل الباهظ لحامله. ونحوه: ثَقُلَتْ فِي السَّماواتِ وَالْأَرْضِ الأسر: الربط والتوثيق. ومنه: أسر الرجل إذا أوثق بالقدّ وهو الإسار. وفرس مأسور الخلق. وترس مأسور بالعقب [[قوله «وترس مأسور بالعقب» في الصحاح: العقب- بالتحريك-: العصب: الذي تعمل منه الأوتار، الواحدة عقبة، تقول منه: عقبت السهم والقدح والقوس: إذا لويت شيئا منه عليه. (ع)]] . والمعنى: شددنا توصيل عظامهم بعضها ببعض، وتوثيق مفاصلهم بالأعصاب. ومثله قولهم: جارية معصوبة الخلق ومجدولته وَإِذا شِئْنا أهلكناهم وبَدَّلْنا أَمْثالَهُمْ في شدّة الأسر، يعنى: النشأة الأخرى. وقيل: معناه: بدلنا غيرهم ممن يطيع. وحقه أن يجيء بإن، لا بإذا، كقوله وَإِنْ تَتَوَلَّوْا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْماً غَيْرَكُمْ، إِنْ يَشَأْ يُذْهِبْكُمْ.
