وقوله: مَّا لَكُمْ لاَ تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقاراً قال أبو عبيدةَ وغيره: تَرْجُونَ معناه تَخَافُونَ [[ذكره ابن عطية (5/ 374) .]] ، قالُوا: والوَقَارُ بمعنى العَظَمَةِ، فكأَنَّ الكلامَ عَلى هذا التأويلِ وَعِيدٌ وتخويفٌ، وقال بعض العلماء: تَرْجُونَ على بَابِها، وكأنه قال: مَا لَكُمْ لا تجعلون رجاءكم لله، ووَقاراً يكونُ على هذا التأويل منهم كأنه يقولُ: تَؤُدَةً مِنْكُمْ وتَمَكُّناً في النظر.
وقوله: وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْواراً قال ابن عباس وغيره: هي إشارة إلى التدريجِ الذي للإنْسَانِ في بطنِ أمه [[أخرجه الطبري (12/ 251) ، رقم: (35012) بنحوه، وذكره ابن عطية (5/ 374) ، وابن كثير (4/ 425) .]] ، وقال جماعة: هي إشارة إلى العِبْرَةِ في اختلاف خلق ألوان الناس وخلقهم، ومللهم، والأطوار: الأحوال المختلفة.
