فقال: ( فِرْعَوْنَ وَثَمُودَ ) يقول: ( فرعون ) ، فاجتزى بذكره، إذ كان رئيس جنده من ذكر جنده وأتباعه. وإنما معنى الكلام: هل أتاك حديث الجنود، فرعون وقومه وثمود، وخفض فرعون ردًّا على الجنود، على الترجمة عنهم، وإنما فتح لأنه لا يجرى وثمود.
