According to Ibn Isḥâq, Al-Walîd ibn Al-Mughîrah and some other Meccan chiefs came together one day and said, “Let’s all agree on one negative description for the Quran in order to turn others away from it.” They started to brainstorm and came up with different labels such as: ‘the word of a poet,’ ‘the mumbling of a madman,’ and ‘the work of a fortunate-teller.’ However, Al-Walîd didn’t like any of those labels, arguing that people could easily reject them as false. He then went home and kept thinking over and over in order to find a ‘suitable’ label that people could believe.  Finally, he came out and told his friends: “We should all say that this Quran is just magic, the word of a man.”
