The first word of verse (2:143) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A resumption particle, preposition and demonstrative pronoun. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "then" or "so" and is used to indicate a sequence of events. The prefixed preposition ka is usually translated as "like" or "as". The demonstrative pronoun is masculine singular. Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).
