The third word of verse (12:39) is divided into 2 morphological segments. An interrogative alif and noun. The prefixed alif is an interrogative particle used to form a question and is usually translated as "is", "are", or "do". The indefinite noun is masculine plural and is in the nominative case (مرفوع). The noun's triliteral root is rā bā bā (ر ب ب).
