The first word of verse (53:21) is divided into 3 morphological segments. An interrogative alif, preposition and personal pronoun. The prefixed alif is an interrogative particle used to form a question and is usually translated as "is", "are", or "do". The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The personal pronoun is second person masculine plural. Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).
