In Arabic, a root is the small set of consonants — usually three — that a whole family of related words is built from. Grouping words by root reveals how Quranic vocabulary connects: الرَّحْمَـٰن, الرَّحِيم and رَحْمَة all come from ر ح م.

This resource gives the roots of an ayah at a time: for each ayah, the roots of its words in the order the words appear. If you need the root of one specific word instead, use the Word root resource.

Example

Ayah 73:4 has these roots:

73:4
زيد رتل قرا رتل

Export format

QUL exports this data as a SQLite database with one row per ayah.

Column Type What it holds
ayah_key TEXT The ayah, in surah:ayah form — for example 73:4.
text TEXT The root of each word in the ayah, in word order, separated by spaces.
The roots are listed in word order but are not individually numbered. To line them up with the words of the ayah you also need the word by word Quran script, available on the Quran Scripts page.
