About root data

Most Arabic words are built from a root: a few consonants that carry a core meaning. Different patterns of vowels and extra letters around those consonants make different, related words. Most roots have three letters; a few have four.

This resource gives the root of every word that has one, so you can group words by meaning and find every word in the Quran that comes from the same root.

One root, many words

The root ر ح م (rHm) is about mercy. It appears 339 times in the Quran, in words such as:

Word Location Meaning Words from this lemma
ٱلرَّحِيمِ 1:3:2 the Especially Merciful 116
رَحۡمَةٗ 44:6:1 mercy 114
ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ 1:3:1 the Most Merciful 57
رَحِمۡنَٰهُمۡ 23:75:2 We had mercy on them 28
أَرۡحَامُكُمۡ 60:3:3 your relatives (literally "wombs") 12
بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ 90:17:9 to compassion 1

Words without a root

About 50,300 of the Quran's words have a root. Particles such as مِنَ ("from", 2:22:9), pronouns and demonstratives such as ذَٰلِكَ ("that", 2:2:1) are not built from a root, so they have no row in this data.

In the Preview tab, click a root under any word to see the other words that come from it.

SQLite format

The download is a SQLite database with two tables: roots (1,642 rows, one per root) and root_words (one row per word that has a root).

Table: roots

uniq_words_count INTEGER How many different word forms those words take
Sample rows
id | arabic_trilateral | english_trilateral | words_count | uniq_words_count
1356 | ر ح م | rHm | 339 | 47

Reading english_trilateral

Each Arabic letter is written as exactly one Latin character, using the Buckwalter transliteration. Upper and lower case are different letters: H is ح and h is ه.

A ا b ب t ت v ث j ج H ح x خ
d د * ذ r ر z ز s س $ ش S ص
D ض T ط Z ظ E ع g غ f ف q ق
k ك l ل m م n ن h ه w و y ي

Table: root_words

Column Type Description
root_id INTEGER The word's root, from roots.id
word_location TEXT Word position as surah:ayah:word, e.g. 1:1:3 is the third word of the first ayah
Sample rows
root_id | word_location
1356 | 1:1:3
450 | 1:2:1
1572 | 2:31:1
This file has word locations, not word text. To show the words, join on location with a word-by-word Quran script.
