Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Al-Qasas — Ayah 83

28:83
تِلۡكَ ٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ نَجۡعَلُهَا لِلَّذِينَ لَا يُرِيدُونَ عُلُوّٗا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَلَا فَسَادٗاۚ وَٱلۡعَٰقِبَةُ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ ٨٣
As for the Abode of the Hereafter,1 We shall assign it exclusively for those who do not seek glory on earth2 nor want to cause mischief.3 The God-fearing shall have the best end.4

  • [1] That is, Paradise which is the abode of real success.
  • [2] “Who do not seek exaltedness”: who are not desirous of establishing their own glory in God’s earth: who do not live like rebels and tyrants and arrogant people but like humble servants: who do not seek to make God’s servants their personal servants.
  • [3] “Mischief” implies the chaos that inevitably appears in human life in consequence of violating the truth. Whatever man does when he disobeys Allah and turns away from His service is nothing but mischief. Partly this mischief occurs when wealth is amassed through unlawful means and expended in unlawful ways.
  • [4] “The God fearing”: those who refrain from His disobedience.
  • [5] Qira’at: Nafieʻ, Ibn ʻAmer, Al-Kesa’i and Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “. . . and for luxury and the garment of mindfulness (of God)—that is good.”
  • [6] Qira’at: Ibn Zekwan, Hamza, Al-Kesa’i, Yaʻqub and Khalaf read it as: “. . . and from it you come out .”
  • [7] A grammatical shift from 2nd person to 3rd person.
  • [8] The Arabic word used is masjidwhich literally means ‘a place for prostration’.
