Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah Luqman — Ayah 22

31:22
۞ وَمَن يُسۡلِمۡ وَجۡهَهُۥٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنٞ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡأُمُورِ ٢٢
Whoever surrenders himself to Allah1 and lives righteously2 grasps the most firm handle.3 The ultimate decision of all matters rests with Allah.

  • [1] That is, practically also he should adopt the attitude of an obedient servant of Allah.
  • [2] That is, he will neither have the apprehension that he will be misguided, nor the fear that he will meet an evil end after having served Allah.
  • [3] This means to say, “O Prophet, the one who refuses to listen to you, thinks that by rejecting Islam and insisting on unbelief he has harmed you, but in fact he has not harmed you but harmed only himself. If he does not listen to you, you need not bother yourself about him at all.”
  • [4] The Arabic wording indicates that these words are directed at a group of women.
  • [5] Literally ‘scheming’.
  • [6] Qira’at: Abu Jaʻfar read it as: “. . . and prepared for them citrus fruits and brought each . . .”
