Tafheem-ul-Quran - Abul Ala Maududi translation for Surah As-Sajdah — Ayah 14

32:14
فَذُوقُواْ بِمَا نَسِيتُمۡ لِقَآءَ يَوۡمِكُمۡ هَٰذَآ إِنَّا نَسِينَٰكُمۡۖ وَذُوقُواْ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخُلۡدِ بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ ١٤
So taste the chastisement on account of your forgetting the encounter of this Day.1 We, too, have forgotten you. Taste the eternal chastisement as a requital for your misdeeds.”

  • [1] That is, “You became so absorbed in pleasure-seeking in the world that you totally forgot that you had to meet your Lord on this Day.”
  • [2] The Arabic word used is a derivative of the word fateh, which literally means ‘open’; according to Az-Zamakhshari and other exegetes it means ‘open a way for us to distinguish between good and evil’.
