36:40

لَا ٱلشَّمۡسُ يَنۢبَغِي لَهَآ أَن تُدۡرِكَ ٱلۡقَمَرَ وَلَا ٱلَّيۡلُ سَابِقُ ٱلنَّهَارِۚ وَكُلّٞ فِي فَلَكٖ يَسۡبَحُونَ ٤٠

Neither does it lie in the sun's power to overtake the moon¹ nor can the night outstrip the day.² All glide along, each in its own orbit.³

Footnotes

[1] This sentence can have two meanings and both are correct.
[2] (1) The sun does not have the power that it should draw the moon into itself, or enter its orbit and collide with it.
[3] (2) The sun cannot appear in the times which have been appointed for the rising and appearing of the moon. It is not possible that the sun should suddenly appear on the horizon when the moon is shining at night.
[4] The Qur’an used the term ‘themselves’ rather than ‘each other’ to make the believerssympathizewith one another by considering any defamation of one as defamation of all.
[5] According to Al-Alousi and other exegetes, this sentence is left open-ended in order to magnify the predicate and leave it to the reader’s imagination.
[6] The words ‘nasty’ and ‘good’ are mentioned in feminine form and may refer either to ‘nasty women’ and ‘good women’ or to ‘nasty words and ‘good words’.

To support a wide range of applications, including websites, mobile apps, and desktop tools, we provide multiple export formats for translations.

Available export formats:

1. Nested Array Structure

Translations are grouped by Surah. Each Surah is an array containing translations for each Ayah in order. This format export translations as simple text, no formatting, no footnotes.

2. Key-Value Structure

Each translation is stored with the Ayah reference (e.g. 1:1) as the key and the translated text as the value. This format also exports translations as simple text, no formatting, no footnotes etc.

Translations with Footnotes

Translations with footnotes are available in three more formats:

1. Footnotes as Tags Format

Footnotes are embedded using a <sup> tag with a foot_note attribute. Footnote contents are stored separately under f key.

2. Inline Footnote Format

Footnotes are inserted directly using double square brackets e.g([[this is footnote]])

3. Text Chunks Format

In chunks export format, text is divided into chunks. Each chunk could be a simple text or an object. Object can be either footnote or a formatting tag. This format is useful for applications can't directly render the HTML tags. Here is an example of Bridges` translation for Surah An-Nas , Ayah 6:
