(If you so venture) a flame of fire and smoke1 shall be lashed at you, which you shall be unable to withstand.

The word shuwaz, as used in the original, means the pure, smokeless flame, and nuhas is the gross smoke without a flame. These two things, one after the other, will be let loose upon the men and jinn, when they try to escape the accountability of Allah.
