Commentary explaining the meaning of the ayahs. One passage often covers several ayahs, so neighbouring ayahs can show the same text.
والاستفهام في قوله أَلَمْ نُهْلِكِ الْأَوَّلِينَ وفي الآيات المماثلة له بعد ذلك، للتقرير، والمقصود به استخراج الاعتراف والإقرار من مشركي قريش على صحة البعث، لأن من قدر على الإهلاك، قادر على الإعادة.
أى: لقد أهلكنا الأقوام الأولين الذين كذبوا رسلهم، كقوم نوح وعاد وثمود.
