Translation for 61:3

كَبُرَ مَقۡتًا عِندَ ٱللَّهِ أَن تَقُولُواْ مَا لَا تَفۡعَلُونَ ٣

How despicable it is in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do!¹

According to Imam Ibn Kathîr, verses 2-4 criticize some of the practices of the Muslims, especially after they moved to Madinah. For example, some of them were eager to know the most beloved deeds to Allah and pledged to perform those deeds. However, when they were told that fighting against their enemies is one of the deeds that Allah loves, they were not interested in it. Moreover, others claimed to have done certain brave acts in battle, but they didn’t actually do those acts.
