Translation of Surah As-Saffat, ayah 149 (37:149)

فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ أَلِرَبِّكَ ٱلۡبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ ٱلۡبَنُونَ ١٤٩

Ask them ˹O Prophet˺ if your Lord has daughters,¹ while the pagans ˹prefer to˺ have sons.

Some pagan Arabs believed that the angels were Allah’s daughters. Some of them were ashamed to have daughters and took pride in their own sons.
