The lemma of every word in the Quran. Pick an ayah to see each of its words with its lemma.
A lemma is the dictionary form of a word: the form you would look up in an Arabic dictionary. Every inflected form of a word, whoever does the action and whatever its tense or case, points to the same lemma.
The lemma عَبَدَ ("to worship") covers 122 words in the Quran, in 34 different forms, including:
| Word | Location | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| نَعۡبُدُ | 1:5:2 |
we worship |
| أَعۡبُدُ | 109:2:2 |
I worship |
| تَعۡبُدُونَ | 12:40:2 |
you (all) worship |
| يَعۡبُدُونَ | 19:49:4 |
they worship |
| ٱعۡبُدُواْ | 71:3:2 |
worship! (said to many) |
| فَٱعۡبُدُوهُ | 19:36:5 |
so worship Him |
A lemma sits between the other two. Each of the words above has its own stem (نَعْبُدُ, يَعْبُدُ, …) but they share one lemma. And one root holds several lemmas: the root ع ب د gives
| Lemma | Meaning | Words | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| عَبْد | servant | 131 | عَبۡدًا 96:10:1 |
| عَبَدَ | to worship | 122 | فَٱعۡبُدُواْ 39:15:1 |
| عَابِد | worshipper | 11 | ٱلۡعَٰبِدُونَ 9:112:2 |
| عِبَادَت | worship | 9 | بِعِبَادَتِهِمۡ 19:82:3 |
About 72,500 of the Quran's words have a lemma. The disconnected letters that open some surahs, such as
الٓمٓ (2:1:1), and standalone pronouns
such as هُوَ (10:67:1) have none.
The download is a SQLite database with two tables: lemmas (4,817 rows, one per lemma) and
lemma_words (one row per word that has a lemma).
